Philippines’ boxing champion and Senatorial candidate Manny Pacquiao has been fired by Nike after his anti-gay remarks, describing gays as “worse than animals”.
Nike releases the following statement: “We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent. Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”
Pacquiao has been under fire after a 30-second interview of him went viral on social media saying people in same-sex relationships “are worse than animals”.
“It’s just common sense. Do you see any animals of the same sex mating? Animals are better off, they can distinguish between male and female,” Pacquiao told TV5 on Monday.
“Now if men are mating with men and women with women, then they are worse than animals,” he said.
Pacquiao has since apologized for the comment but that didn’t stop Nike from dropping him.
Yes Manny, it’s really happening.
