China has expressed serious concern over a trawler that was sunk by the Argentine coast guard on Monday after it was caught fishing illegally in its territorial waters.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the embassy in Argentina immediately filed a complaint, expressing grave concern over the incident, according to Lu.
China demanded of a thorough investigation on the incident and update the Chinese side, and safeguard Chinese sailors’ security and legitimate rights and interests, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said.
“China urged the Argentine side to take effective measures to prevent such incident from happening again,” Lu said.
A Chinese trawler was shot by the Argentina’s coast guard after it repeatedly tried to force a collision with the coast guard vessel while fleeing to international waters off the coast of Argentina, leading to that sinking of the Chinese vessel.
There were no fatalities. Argentina’s coast guard rescued four sailors while Chinese trawlers nearby rescued the remaining 28 sailors.
