The U.S. Navy is currently testing a drone warship that would be able to hunt enemy submarines.
Originally developed by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), the Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) was designed to hunt down the next generation of submarines, even the quietest ones.
It weights 140 tons, can go 31 mph and is 132 feet long.
DARPA says this drone warships cost about $20 million
It can travel thousands of kilometers for months at a time without a single crew member aboard.
The ship’s design is like the “Balangay”, known as the oldest watercraft found in the Philippines.
The Balangay was the first wooden watercraft excavated in Southeast Asia and is evidence of early Filipino craftsmanship and their seamanship skills during pre-colonial times.
